D&D Deathmatch Fun and Games

Last week, I enjoyed a pleasant day in the company of the East Midlands RPG Group at their annual Deathmatch tournament. Using 4e D&D rules, players spawned into an arena and kicked the blazes out of each other against the clock.
There were two games, an individual game and a team game. I took part in [...]

D&D Player’s Strategy Guide: A More Thoughtful Look

Yesterday, I posted a reactionary piece called D&D Player’s Strategy Guide: How Much Will It Suck? which garnered some thoughtful comments. Often more thoughtful than the original article so I felt it appropriate to give the subject a second, more considered look.
Bad Title
The title of my article was unfair because I not basing my opinions [...]

D&D 4e Review: The Desire

The Desire, Published by Nevermet Press
What is The Desire? It is a chimera made from the parts of many creatures – part adventure, part background material and part fiction. All the product of a unusual, collaborative writing process. Originally written without a specific game system in mind, the PDF edition has been updated for D&D [...]

D&D History & Growth (2009 Edition)

How much has the 4th Edition grown over the past year?
Following last year’s investigation into the size of each edition of D&D, the big question for this year’s updated graph is how fast is 4e’s rule base expanding? Is it likely to remain at a manageable size or will it become as bloated and unwieldy [...]

Poll: The Lifespan of D&D 4e

Last year, I produced a graph showing the relative size of each edition of D&D from 1974 onwards. This included all the published and announced books for 4e but only six months from its launch, the data for 4e was limited. Now I’m updating it to give a fuller picture of 4th Edition and I [...]

D&D is Doomed (But Not Just Yet)

The fourth part of the D&D Carnival – This time focusing on it the game’s future.
“On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero”
The simple truth is that D&D, the product and the brand, will one day disappear. Long before that, it will be unrecognisable to anyone who is playing D&D [...]

It Is Not the D&D I Know and Love

Edition Wars IV: A New Hope
For the carnival, I wanted to avoid mindless, repetative Edition Wars over which version of D&D was best so I set a challenge. Play a version of D&D you have never played before and write about that. Anything from original D&D to 4th Edition and including all the D20 variants. [...]

D&D 3.5 Resurgent?

There is no doubt that WotC wants to kill off D&D 3.5. Nothing would please them more than to have everyone chuck their old books in the bin and buy every 4e product they can. There is nothing wrong with this and it is exactly the same approach taken by games console makers, car manufacturers [...]

Dungeons & Dragons Online for Free

Dungeons & Dragons Online, the D&D MMO, has just announced a free version called Eberron Unlimited. It claims to be entirely free and I guess it will support itself by people paying to upgrade to the full Dungeons & Dragons Online or by spending real money to upgrade their character in the in-game store.
I wonder [...]

D&D Gametable Still Under Development?

The latest D&D News email arrived today with news of forth coming releases (none of which was new except possibly the “Draconomicon (Nov 09) focuses on Metallic Dragons”. One interesting nugget was the email’s finishing paragraph:

… and coming soon, the ground-breaking new digital services such as the character visualizer, D&D Gametable and Dungeon Builder [...]
